Ask someone to select any or all of the math candles and place them in the holder in any order they would like. Note the candles are double sided so they can orient them in many ways. One of the many things I like about this puzzle is that it does not look nearly as difficult as it actually is. People seem to get absorbed in it quite readily as you always seem to get close. It fact though, it is a difficult level 5 (of 5) puzzle.Originally designed in 1933 by Theodore Edison, son of the famous inventor Thomas Edison, and made by his company Calibron Products of West Orange, N.J. It was offered as just pieces and you were told they made a rectangle and there was only 1 solution. Turns out the only possible solution is a square shape, as verified by Ken Irvine’s computer analysis. Ken is working on a full analysis of the puzzle, with excerpts noted below. The first step of this analysis was to determine how many possible rectangles needed to be checked. Since the total area of

Diana Cryptosystem Cipher – Small

Product Information:
Object of this Diana Cryptosystem Cipher – Small is: Use disk to decode or send coded messages.; Brand: Creative Crafthouse; Types: Dave Janelle, Other Wood Puzzles; Dimensions: Approx. 10 cm diameter / 4 in diameter; Packaging: Plastic Pouch
Product Description: An authentic reproduction of the cipher used by US Army Special Forces (Green Berets) during the Vietnam War and throughout the cold war period. Designed in conjunction with a Special Forces soldier that actually used the system in the field and who wrote the instruction sheets and a historical record of its use. At the height of the systems use in South East Asia there were hundreds of singleton Special Forces operators, A-Teams, B-Teams, and communications trans-stations across Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia all using the DIANA system. In practice, encrypted messages were sent on high frequency radio channels using morse code which provided an additional level of security. According to research and firsthand accounts from Special Forces operators this is the last physical cipher wheel used by the U.S. military and has not had much public discussion or exposure until this time. This cipher is considered unbreakable when used with a One-Time Pad (OTP) per the techniques described. Despite its level of extreme security, the cipher isvery easy and fast to use. To aid you in quickly using it to encode or decode a message, a worksheet that even a novice can use to create secret messages is included. Disks are made from wood and all text is deeply laser engraved. The back of the disk contains the emblem of the US Army Special Forces. Made in USA by Creative Crafthouse.

Swords of Truth

Swords of Truth
Product Information:
Difficulty of this Swords of Truth is: Level 7 – Challenging; Brand: Creative Crafthouse; Types: Dave Janelle, Magic Items, Other Wood Puzzles; Dimensions: 5.5 in x 1.1 in x 0.1 in / 14 cm x 2.8 cm x 0.3 cm
Product Description: An astounding magic trick done with math. This is based on math magic from the book, the “Collected works of Alex Elmsley” by Stephen Minch. The 8 different alder wood swords are very cool and give the trick a nice flare. Each sword has 6 different numbers on it. (48 different numbers in total are used by all swords). Each sword is about 5 1/2″ long and 1/4″ thick. They will come on strung on a chain for your convenience. Let a spectator select one of the swords and then a number on that sword, keeping that number a secret. You can even have up to 8 people select a sword at random. Then have them simply indicate the shapes (square or circle) surrounding the numbers on the sword, but they must lie about the shape surrounding the number they chose. At no time do they say aloud any numbers and at no time during the trick are you able to see the swords. Astonishingly, you will be able to correctly name the number(s) chosen. I will not reveal the details of the math secrets here, but as a hint, simple binary codes are established when they tell you the shapes and you will easily be able to determine the number. This is a GREAT fun item at gatherings. I think 12 yrs old and up can do this, and perhaps younger if a bit advanced for their age. Its a good item for math teachers also, as it demonstrates in a fun way the use of binary math.Designed and made in Spring Hill, FL.

There are 8 cards each measuring about 3.2″ x 3.8″ x 1/8″ thick. The cards have a different series of numbers and different windows cut into each card. Select a number, or have someone select a number, and the card will very quickly and easily predict the number. No math is used during this process. Unique to us as we made it based on a 1904 set of mind reader cards which likely have not been reproduced for close to 100 years. We made them out of high quality alder wood and its really a collector quality item.

Brainiac 9 Magic Cards

Brainiac 9 Magic Cards
Product Information:
Brand of this Brainiac 9 Magic Cards is: Creative Crafthouse; Types: Dave Janelle, Magic Items; Dimensions: 2 in x 2.5 in x 0.125 in / 5.1 cm x 6.4 cm x 0.3 cm
Product Description: Amazing magic possible with these cards that use interesting math principles. There are 9 hardwood cards from 3 different woods, each with a different number from 1 to 9 on one side and they are blank on the other side. The cards are precision laser cut from 1/8″ woods. The shape of each card is a head and each is identical at about 2.3″ x 2″ Here is how the trick may go: (note, see video for details) Ask someone to pick 1 card of each color and make a pile. Then ask them (or a different person) do pick from the remaining cards and do the same, ie, select one card from each color. You will now have 3 sets of cards each with 1 of each color. Ask them to arrange the sets in any color order that they want, but in the same color order for each pile. (such as light wood, dark wood, red wood). Have them look at each set of 3 cards. There are essentially three 3-digit numbers. Have them add these 3 numbers together. Surprisingly, no matter how that cards are arranged, you will always be able to determine the number. I won’t spoil the secret here, but watch the video if you want to know how its done. It can be used as a straightforward prediction or even more fun as a magic book test. For example, after they have added the numbers, ask them to take the first 3 digits of their sum and turn to that page number Then ask them to read across to the word represented by the 4th digit (it will be the 5th word). Then have them write down the word. You will be able to predict that word! You can even do it with a handful of books and let them choose the book, as long as you have prepared ahead of time. You may find other fun ways to use this amazing math fact puzzle, such as, can you arrange the cards in a 3×3 grid such that each row, column, and diagonal adds to 15? Special thanks to Alan JAckson of the UK for his suggestion on this puzzle. Made in their Spring Hill, FL shop.

Product Description: 1927 Royal V. Heath marketed a magic effect called “The Di-Ciphering Trick” based on a math trick developed by Edmund Balducci. It consisted of these 5 dice cubes bearing a different 3 digit number on each face – 30 numbers in all. A spectator would roll the dice and the magician would quickly announce the sum of all the numbers. Quite amazing given that there are over 7700 different combination of numbers that could show on the 5 cubes. If you want to know the secret of the dice, you can watch the video, but I don’t want to spoil it for those that may not want to know now. But, rest assured that if you can do quite simple addition in your head you can used these dice with great effect. Made in Spring Hill with the 7/8″ Dice having numbers deeply laser engraved. Case with dice measures about 5 1/4″ x 2 1/2″ x 2″

Product Information:
Brand of this Wizard Cards is: Creative Crafthouse; Types: Dave Janelle, Magic Items; Dimensions: each card is 2.1 in x 1.8 in x 0.12 in / 5.4 cm x 4.5 cm x 0.3; Packaging: Shrinkwrap
Product Description: 6 hardwood cards have a different number lasered on each side (12 different numbers total). You, as the Wizard, will be able to quickly predict the sum of the numbers lying face up on the cards as arranged by a spectator. Have someone arrange the cards in any order and add the numbers facing up without you seeing. Then ask them to simply tell you (or optionally write down) only the shapes surrounding the numbers. Upon hearing the shapes, you will be able to almost immediately tell them tell them answer. Really quite amazing! Each card measures 2.2″ x 1.75″ x 1/8″ thick and is made from State of Maine Hardwoods. May be maple, cherry, or birch used. The math required to solve is modest, and I suspect most 10 year olds would be capable, and some younger depending on ability.

Include the animal you started with in the count.-Remove the animal you touch on count 4.-Start again on any animal and repeat the 1,2,3,4 count – removing the animal you touch on the 4 count.-When counting you must include each circle whether it contains an animal or not.The GOAL is to end up with 1 animal on the board- The DONKEY – or if you prefer you can specify your chosen animal at the start of the gameThis is a lot harder than it may first appear, but if you can figure out the logic behind the moves you will be able to solve it every time regardless on where the Donkey is first positioned. Washington Monument – Creative Crafthouse

Washington Monument - Creative Crafthouse
Product Information:
Object of this Washington Monument – Creative Crafthouse is: get all 4 sides to add to 555; Difficulty: Level 9 – Gruelling; Brand: Creative Crafthouse; Types: Dave Janelle, Other Wood Puzzles; Dimensions: 9.5 in x 2.4 in x 2.4 in / 24 cm x 6 cm x 6 cm
Product Description: The idea for this puzzle came from Jerry Slocum and Jack Botermans “New Book of Puzzles”. The object of the puzzle is to get all 4 sides to add to 555, the height of the Washington Monument! Each of the cubes will rotate on the internal post.A great challenge for the math inclined as it is VERY difficult. It might make a good class project from middle school to high school. There are only 9 possible solutions. Here is a statistical analysis of the puzzle. So how many different ways are there to align the 10 blocks? To derive this number we’ll start by orienting the lowest block on the base. Since there are no markings on the base that need to be lined up with, the block can be freely rotated with no constraints. There is no wrong way to orient the first block. It’s a freebee. The second block (second from the bottom) gets oriented next. The second block can be rotated into 4 different positions to have its 4 numbers line up with the 4 numbers on the first block. This results in the first two blocks being able to form 4 combinations. This can also be viewed as 1 x 4; one way to place the first block and 4 ways to place the second block. Once the third block is added, for every combination of the first 2 blocks, the third block can be placed in 4 different rotations. This provides 4 x 4 or 16 combinations for the first 3 blocks. When the fourth block is added, for each of the 16 combinations of the first 3 blocks, the fourth block can be placed in 4 different rotations. This results in 16 x 4 or 64 combinations. The pattern of multiplying the number of combinations by 4 for each block holds for the remaining blocks resulting in 1 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 (also written as 4**9) or 262,144 combinations for all 10 blocks.Note that there is only nine 4’s that get multiplied even though there are 10 blocks. This is because the first block is not bounded. If the base had 4 numbers that the first block had to align with, then there would have been ten 4’s. In general the equation for any amount of blocks and numbers per block would result in the following number of combinations with the first block unconstrained: NumbersPerBlock**(NumberOfBlocks – 1)If the first block were restrained by adding by adding numbers to the base, the equation would be :numbers per block ** number of blocksMy sincere thanks to Ken Irvine of Prediction Systems, Spring Lake, NJ for his analysis work above. Now, there are 9 possible solutions to this puzzle. With 262,144 possible permutations of the blocks possible you have a pretty slim chance (1 in 29,127) of finding an answer on the first try!
